A major advantage of the new law, in my opinion, is the calculator comparison which shows how long to pay off at the current payment, plus how long to pay off at a slightly higher payment. I urge all readres to take this seriously, and use it. Do whatever it is you have to do to come up with the extra money to make the slightly higher payment. In most cases it is only 20 to 40.oo ollars per month, and will get you paid off in 3 or 4 years, provided you stop using the card.
Another big item to be aware of is the 800#, which is listed, for access to a consumer credit counseling program. Just be aware that these are non-profitcredit counseling programs and are completely controlled by the banks. They survive because the banks pay them for every dollar paid to them, through the non-profit. The real problem is that they can only offer you one debt solution. So, if you are in a complicated debt situation and cannot afford your monthly payments now, chances are slim that they can help you.

I think you raise valid points with the fact that if you are in a complicated debt situation, then these non profit debt counseling places are more than likely not gonna be able to help you. I think all too often once people get to the point that they are seeking advice like this, it takes more than just one offered solution to help them.

Yes, your comment is right on point--For to many years the idea that the non-profits were the be all of debt relief dominated the industry--"The times they are a changin".
Thanks for the comment

Awesome information, debt consolidation is one of the ways to go today if you are not to deep in to debt other wise you just might have to file for complete relief, and with our economy no one should be ashamed ,they bailed out large companies so they could bail us out also.

I found a lot of good information on your post I just personally think you need the help and advice of a trusted proffesional. I don't think you should try to handle a debt settlement with out help.

Thank you for the comment--The bottom line is that their will always be some consumers who are capable of doing the debt settlement process themselves. Those people need the best information on the process as they can get, so they can have a better chance of succeeding,

Whether or not you are getting a lawyer to help you, you need to know what you are doing in your bankruptcy case so you don’t get burned.
